Although River Cane,Arundinaria gigantea is the only native Genus of bamboo, there were until recently 2 recognized species.A third species has been found, and is now accepted as A.appalachiana.

I don't think Arundinaria much in danger as it is listed as a noxious weed in some southern parts of the country. I have a big clump of A. gigantea on my property. It has reached about 7 feet since I planted it about 5 years ago. It is rather invasive and spreads all over the place. Just right for my little half acre of gardens. It can get to 15 feet tall.
