It is carved of mica. The Hopewell were also fine metalworkers in copper, and occasionally silver, and gold. Their gravesites yielded many fine carvings in stone, wood, and bone. their pottery was very fine. Their most elaborate earthwork in Newark Ohio occupies several square miles. There are avenues, plazas, burial mounds, and a long corridor stretching to the river. There is a rich tradition of veneration for the snake in many of the early cultures.
