The Runes and Magic (35 posts)
    General Thread 0 Featured October 3 , 2003

From magical formulae to hex signs, the runes were used in magic for most of their history. In somes sense the runes themselves were considered sacred: according to the Viking legend, Odin himself "found" the runes while hanging on the world Tree Yggdrasil - pinned there by his spear as a sacrifice of himself to himself. And in modern times a new interest in the runes has developed in the New Age movement and in revived pagan religions like Asatru. This thread is for discussion of all aspects of the runes and magic in the Germanic world, both in the ancient worlds and in their various modern re-inventions.

Sweyn's book is a eye opener for the rune students. A good website to explore about runes also: http://www.runewebvitki.com , which I found all information very honest for the newcomers and the advanced students. The problem with the modern magic in the runes to be so bold. That all of it is invented. We have very vague history explaining what the magic may have been, however even the interpretation of the runic finds seems to carry a different meaning between scholars. So I believe the answer would be based on which scholar you may believe more ;). I suggest higher learned books on the subject to find some answer in the magic. Our kindreds left clues, and as more finds come to light in the modern time. The more information we have to piece together. I believe the runes was based on a secular basis and since that was the script of the Germanic world of that time; it is obvious that the runes would be used then for the formulae's presented. As for divination, once again very vague information on this. Seems this was held silent within oral tradition. Which by any luck you find one to share this? You will soon discover no book in the world could ever discribe this system. Gotta love those traditionalists, always staying quiet so that the modern authors won't steal the system and make it some mojo tool ;).
