James Mooney (1861-1921) was an anthropologist who devoted much of his life to studying the American Indians. He lived with the Cherokee of North Carolina and then wrote this book. The title is "Myths" but the book includes equal amounts of in-depth history, cultural details and traditions of the Tsalagi people.
I have the Dover edition, published in 1995, which is an unabridged version of the original work issued by the Government Printing Office, Washington DC in 1900 as part of the 19th annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology. The only thing that is changed in the Dover edition is the maps are in black and white instead of in color and some of the plates are not in the same order. The maps and pictures alone are worth the price of the book, a treasure trove for anyone who is interested in Cherokee history and lore.
