Native to the Himalyas, the Bhutia, Spiti, and Zaniskari ponies are natives of the mountainous regions and unable to tolerate the heat and humidity of the lowlands. They are known for their sure-footedness, endurance and stamina, and are largely self sufficient and require little fodder. Usually even tempered, they are used mainly as pack animals. Interbred for many years, the distinguishing characteristics have mostly been lost, though many of these ponies are grey. They are now known as "Indian Country Bred" steeds and each breed is itself endangered.
