I find that amaryllis often need support for their very long flower stalks. When I was teaching I would take a planted bulb to school for my students to study. We used a yard stick as a stake. The kids loved watching how fast these bulbs grow. They got into the habit of checking the plant's measurements in the morning and before leaving. It was always at least 1/2" taller....sometimes over 1".
Try this sometime. It's just as fun for adults as children.
