Titus Terentius Crassus To: Publius Claudius Nero, propraetor of Hispania Citerior
From: Titus Terentius Crassus, senator
Greetings, governor.
Rome is as busy as always during elections. Maybe even more, as I hear never came before so much countrymen to vote as this year.
It may be bad luck to state this in advance, but I am absolutely sure of your election. Senator Sisenna and you are clearly ahead of your contesters, unless the rumours about the amount of Messala's spendings are indeed true. Hopefully your consular year will be more quiet than this one. However, I fear you will need all your diplomatic skills to achieve that.
It was a hard choice between the two of you, given Sisenna's unexpectedly wise opinion of the Eastern situation. I wish he retained this wisdom for the whole next year, Rome needs two able consuls to deal with the Eastern threat. Reliability is the most important thing in this situation, we have to show our friends and our enemies alike, what they can expect from us.
Thank you again for the invitation to your domus, I will exploit it. And I expect you at a party for celebrating the birth of my second grandchild, sometime at March. We will fix the date after my daughter delivers the child.
Actually Gnaeus Sempronius is not a nephew to me, he is my son-in-law. But it is very kind of you to recognize his name. He does his duty as we all do, hoping that his deeds bring him fame. At last they have defeated the rebels in Narbonensis, it is only a matter of months that order returns to the province. His commander, Scaeva, is a remarkable man, we will surely find him among the candidates for praetorship during next election.
