    A Description of a Typical Domus Pompeiiana

    Tabernae and Officinae

    Tabernae and officinae are shops and small workshops in front of the house.

    The ordinary types are caupona - public-houses; thermopolium - sale of warm drinks; pistrinum - mill or bakery; fullonica - wash room, dye-works; and atriensis - the caretaker and gatekeeper of the domus.

    Atrium

    The atrium consists of an implivium - a vessel for the collection of rain water. Beside the vessel is the holy table and the cartibulum - an urn.
    The complivium is an opening in the roof for to let in the daylight and let the rain pour down in implivium.
    The adjoining rooms are the cubicula - resting room and the ala - room for everyday use.

    Viridarium

    An andron - corridor is the connection between the atrium and the veridarium - a garden with fountains, statues and the hortus - the kitchen garden. Round the veridarium is a perystilium.
    The adjoining rooms to the veridarium is the culina - kitchen, the lararium for lari - the family gods who protect the the home, the balneum - bathrooms with water of different temperatures, and the gynaeceum - the women's departement.

    The Perystilium

    The house has an enormous garden. It is decorated with a canal, small waterfalls, fishes, small temples, nymph grottos, statues of gods and an outdoor dining room.
    Triclina for different seasons or oeci, exedrea and other luxorious rooms are round this greater perystilium.
