I thought of this too. Since the fish likely available in the streams of the eastern mountains would have been a good bit smaller than the humans, I was wondering if the amount of poison needed to kill a fish wouldn't have been enough to harm a person. Still though, it would be interesting to know how many people died from their dinner before they figured all this out.
I do so wish the book had been more specific.
