In fifth century Greece after the Persian have been driven back to their harsh homelands of slavery there emerges a city-state of eminence and power the like of which has not been seen before. Athens has emerged from a struggling democracy that the rest of Greece held in contempt to become the cultural and martial light of Hellas. The bright city of Athene welcomes all newcomers into its arms. Displaced vagrants, soldiers of other polis’ and skilled artisans all find refuge within Athens’ long walls and bustling streets. This is a time before the disastrous war with Sparta. A time of unsurpassed strength and growth. But one area or Deme of Athens has a special place in the defence of the new nation. Marathon, the deme of soldiers and athletes defends Athens from an invasion of hordes of barbarians. Named after the famous battle which first showed the world that Athens was not to be toyed with lightly, it has evolved into the powerhouse that it is now. A place of spirited women and fearless men. People who would do whatever it takes to keep the rest of Athens, indeed all of Greece, secure. Within the Deme of Marathon are members of the Delian League. They are the backbone of the Athenian army and its famously resilient navy. Men and women passionate in their defence of an ideal. The ideal of freedom and individuality.
