Prince Siddhartha was born in a garden called Lumbini, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there. The pillar inscription says "here the Buddha was born". Records made by the Chinese pilgrim Fa Xian were also used in the process of identifying this site. Many countries have built temples, monastries or stupas near Lumbini Garden.
