    in the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula. Deer, peccaries (javalina), monkeys, anteaters, coatis, rabbits, hares, raccoons, armadillos, iguanas, paca, moles, foxes, opossum's, jaguars, cougars, many different kinds of snakes and more -- most of them edible. Among the birds are: pheasants (kambul), wild turkeys, partridges, quail, chachalacas and many different kinds of doves and pigeons; these have been the protein sources for the Maya.

    I read the other day that they raised hairless dogs that did not bark, which were sacrificed during the religious ceremonies and then eaten.
