OK... no one has posted to this topic for 2 years... my gosh.
A couple of my current favourite books are 100 Australian Bushrangers 1789 - 1901 and The All-Time Favourite Australian Song Book.
The bushrangers book covers all of the well knowns including Ned Kelly, Captain Starlight, Ben Hall... the latter two being my favourite bad guys... *grin*
One thing I like about this book is that it tells what each of the bushrangers did, firstly to get here to Australia and how after most of them being convicts, their lives didn't improve, so they sought other ways to entertain themselves... *laugh*
And the Song Book... well that was a find. In a Vinnies store window just waiting for me. It has all the classics... from the convict days of Moreton Bay and The Wild Colonial Boy to Click Go The Shears and Where The Dog Sits On the Tuckerbox... to the well known song Come On Aussie, Come On.
However, this is one book which needs a reprint of new classics. The book was originally published in the 70s.
There is a new batch of songs which would make the grade of equality with the ones currently in this book. A couple of them are... our Telstra ad and Goanna's classic Solid Rock. There are also some others which have become theme songs for we Aussies... like Men At Work's classic Down Under, when we took the America's Cup.
Both books are great and create lots of discussion and questions.
