According to Anne Ross's book on Pagan Celtic Britain, "Verbeia is seemingly connected with the River Wharfe and is likely that she was some kind of spring goddess...appears with a disproportionately large head, wearing a pleated dress which reaches her feet and holding in either hand a sinuous object, undoubtedly meant to represent serpents."

Or, hmm, maybe that sinuous object was actually that mystical silver branch that was going around here on Beltaine.
