Dragonlance goes without saying, not a bad book in the series.
David Eddings is also an execellent writer, well worth reading his books.
Terry Brooks' Shannara series is brilliant.
C.S.Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia all the books are a joy to read.
I'm waiting to get my hands on Phillip Pullman's trilogy, but if anyone in the group has read them, I'd love to hear comments and opinions.
I have recently discovered an author named Michael Gerber, who has written 4 that I know of, satirical books
Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody (haven't read yet)
Barry Trotter and the Unnecessary Sequel (haven't read yet)
Barry Trotter and the Dead Horse ( have read and it's laugh out loud funny)
The Chronicles of Blarnia (haven't read yet)
One thing though, the Barry Trotter that I read isn't for children in my view, as it contains some swearing, sex and drug references. Not on every page mind, but I wouldn't recommend any child under 14 or 15 to read it.
Another new author I discovered (nb, new author= new to me) is Martin Stephen.
His hero is Henry Greshem and the books are set in early Stuart England. I've only read the one book so far, The Desperate Remedy, which is about the Gunpowder Plot in the early 1600's.
