The Sport of Life and Death: The Mesoamerican Ballgame
E. Michael Whittington, Thames & Hudson, 2001
Whittington is the curator of pre-Columbian and African art at North Carolina's Mint Museum, who organised the exhibition this book is based around. The book, which claims to be "the most comprehensive work ever on the ancient ballgame", contains a series of essays by various experts including mythic games between humans and gods, the human sacrifices that followed certain games, the ball court of Aztec capital Tenochtitlan etc. It also includes 323 photographs (171 in color) of numerous artistic and textual representations of the games.
The Mesoamerican Ballgame
Vernon L. Scarborough; David R. Wilcox, University of Arizona Press, reprint 1993
Not so much about the ballgame itself, but a comprehensive discussion of known archaeological sites as of 1991 with detailed summary data for hundreds if not thousands of sites from the Mayan region to the America southwest. The book is a collection of academic papers that arose out of an archaeological conference, and assumes considerable advance knowledge of what the ballgame is, how it is played, and its role in ordinary life. It does include some interesting discussions of the mythic and political roles of the ballgame, as discernable from ceramic art, stone art, and the Mayan written record and some superb drawings.
Note: I don't have either of these books myself yet so they're not personal recommendations, though the Whittington one is on my Amazon list! LOL The above descriptions are pieced together from various reviews to offer a guideline only.
