In responding to Galba's question, I also have read lots, here and there, about the images of one's ancestors that were kept in a special area of the house (although I didn't know precisely where). There is a marvelous sculpture, if I can find it, showing a roughly early-Empire Roman standing holding two of these images - often done in wax, I understand, and thus able to honestly recreate how your great-great-great-grandfather the Consul looked.

I have a multitude of questions about these ancestors, but we are definitely in the right period - because it was the very ability of the optimates to serve the state during the Republic in various positions, enhancing their auctoritas and clout, that led to their being postumously preserved as an inspiration to their successors to do as well, or better.

Another thing I've often wondered - was this ETRUSCAN? Where did the Romans get this notion? I've never heard of it elsewhere!
