Yucatec Maya is the language spoken in the Yucatan peninsula... variants of Maya are Itza, which is spoken in the Peten, Guatemala, and Mopan, which is not a language but a geographical location in the south of the department of the Peten known as the Mopan or Maya mountains. They speak a variation of Yucatec Maya. There are approximately 36 to 38 Maya languages in existence today. At one time there were more than 46. What Maya language does your friend speak... where is he from in Guatemala. I am in Xelajuj or Quetzaltenango at the moment. Here they speak Western or Occidental Kiche or Quiche. I am learning Kiche at the present. I also speak Yucatec Maya. You need to find out what Maya language your friend speaks. Perhaps I can help you... Cheers
