    As a great scholar of Shakespeare, the late Pro. Harold Goddard, once observed, "In the final analysis, the thief only robs himself, and the murderer has himself for his chief victim..." (or words to that effect. My memory may not have his words exactly right!) I think your observation of the possible effect created in the Spartan mentality has great validity.
