I have been given an amazing gift of an ancient intagalio, (1-2 cent. AD) with the carved portrait of an emperor with a curly beard. The stone is honey carnlian. I was told that they were given to favorites or intimates at court, and could be used for favors. I was wondering how do I find out exactly who it is? My best guess is that since Hadrian, in roughly 130 AD, stated that all portraits of the emperor were to have curly beards and dignified facial expressions that it was made either of him, or perhaps Antoninous Pius. I have looked at many books and websites, but perhaps I have overlooked something obvious. Any ideas? Thanks.
