    A quick study of the subject can be found in Roman Building Material and Techniques by Jean-Pierre Adam (originally published in French as La Construction Romaine: matériaux et techniques), pp. 145-150.

    There was first the unbaked brick, opus latericium, in use up to the time of Augustus and then baked brick, opus testaceum from then on.
