by Robert Anton Wilson, a cult classic sci-fi book for many years. It is quite a good read, with an incredible amount of plot twists, conspiracies, half-truths, etc. I have read it a few times and still don't get all of it. It is fiction, not a history, but the Illuminati does play a significant role in the book.
