I'm a bit late with this one, since it's celebrated in India in March. Holi is also known as the Festival of Colors, and marks the coming of spring. This most lively of Indian festivals begins on the night before the full moon with a bonfire which burns the leftover dried leaves and twigs of winter.
"People throw colored water with pichkaari (a traditional device to spray colored water from a distance keeping oneself safe), gubbare (balloons filled with water to throw on others from a distance) and gulal (colored powder) at each other."
