Saw a most interesting documentary last night on the connection between the god Apollo and the many statues of the Buddha portrayed in human form.

I had not realized there was a direct influence. Prior to the Alexandrian Conquest the Buddha had never been depicted as a human being. The symbology was usually a tree. It was the inflence of Hellenic sculptures that made the difference.
