I think that we always have a choice no matter what the circumstances, we can respond positively and constructively and stay in the light [so to speak]. We can also be negative and destructive in any given situation. The more we go in either direction will continue to increase the tendency and can even eliminate the opposite inclination all together.

The human condition seems to be a no win situation, when it cames to right and wrong. You can be damed if you do, and damed if you don't. There is no way to win. Loss is inevitable.
