Head on over to 50242 (Theatre of Dionysus Production Notes board): 'Board: Production Notes - (2 threads / -2 msgs.)' (in reality there are two threads and no messages). I guess the board numbering issues aren't simple off-by-ones. It looks like that for every message thread in a board, 1 is subtracted from the total message count for the board. This is present in every group board I've checked so far.
To confirm: find a group board (one with few messages is best ;) e.g. Rome -> Brittania group -> Roman Brittania board or Babylon -> Flooding of the Black Sea group -> Casting and Planning board) and manually count up all the messages in all the threads on the board (don't use the counts given on the board front page - they're often wrong, I suspect this might be more of a database integrity issue than actual logic errors, but I could be wrong :) - go to each thread and count manually instead). Then subtract from that number the number of threads on the board. Compare your calculation to the message total given on the board front page, they should be the same. Note that this appears to only be true for group boards; I haven't figured out the city boards (automatic message counts are suspect, and technically I should be studying for finals, so manually counting thousands of messages takes too much time right now :) ), but I guess it's possible that they follow the same pattern.

Oh, and I bet you'll come back to me and tell me you know all about this and all my counting is for nought ;)
Also, would you rather I mailed bugreports like this one?
