Gladiator is much more enjoyable if you stop thinking of it as being set in ancient Rome. Instead, consider it a swords-and-sandals fantasy epic elaborating on Roman elements.
This saves you from trying to match it up with actual history or Roman life. No more grumbling over Commodus' death or Lucilla's wardrobe -- just enjoy the spectacle.
Visit the SPQR Companion for all things Roman (including spoiler links).
