There are many interactive story groups on AW in which each member takes on a character within the story. That story can be made up, factual or alternative history.
I personally am a member of two role-play groups. One called 'The Roman Republic' http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Group/178780 is based on an alternate history in that Pompeius Magnus died fighting in the east and Julius Caesar was killed by the pirates who took him hostage. Each member is their own made up character and then tries to make a name for themselves
The other is called Pax Inter Pares -http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Group/489398- and it is another alternative history. This time instead of fighting a civil war Pompey and Caesar came to an accord and the empire has basically divided into three factions Caesar in Gaul/Italy, Pompey in Spain and the Exiled Senate in Greece/Asia. There is a slight difference in that each member has to pick and play as an historical character. I am the young and impetuous Sextus Pompeius
If Roman history isn't your fancy there are plenty of other role-playing groups throughout all regions of AW

This will give you a list of all 38 RP groups currently running in AncientWorlds. If you are looking for some fun that will challenge not only your historic knowledge but also your creative writing, I would definitely reccommend that you check them out
