The word "yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" which means union. It can refer either to a practice or a philosophy. The practice of yoga is any activity that brings the individual closer to the aim of yoga as expounded by yoga philosophy.

That aim expounded by yoga philosophy (also known as Supreme Knowledge) is to reunite the individual soul with the cosmic soul, the Supreme Self (or God).
