It's not just literary
sources, the royal palace is there. much of it has been excavated
and I'm certain you must have seen it with your own eyes. It is a
hugh complex of three main buildings looking down on the city from
the hills.
This is more likely peripheral
information and there may be no ancient source which states simply,
Pella is the capitol of Macedon. The capital is where the king lives
permanently and the court is therefore there. Thus, when someone
goes to court at Pella. we know that Pella is the seat of government
and therefore, the capitol.
I can give you two references
from Aeschines both from his speech, " On The Embassy ". in 111
he states, "When the ambassadors had assembled at Pella and Philip
had arrived, and the herald called the ambassadors of the Athenians....."and
161 where he states, " and he nicknamed Alexander, Margites, and
had the effrontery to say that Alexander would never stir out of
Macedon for he was content, he said, to saunter around Pella and
keep watch over the omens. "
Both of these quotations
indicate Pella as the capitol city of Macedon. There must be many
more, but they would be peripheral information. I'm certain you can
find a great deal more than this if you research documents of the
4th century - rather than specific geographical works.
