The thing is he and all the norse gods knew it was coming when Fenris would swallow the sun.
I havent read that Fenris ends up eating Odin,thought TYR was to deal with the wolf while Thor took on the giant - have forgoten who Odin was to fight.
There are some different versions in the sagas,depending which ones you read.
There seems to be a successful Odin take over bid during the early viking era -As it was Tyr that was the all father but Odin seem to moved into that role.

But the Vikings wheren't all doom and gloom though -the gods will be re-born as will man and woman,as the bright one -Baldur (now was he a son of Frigg or Freya? ) would walk from Hella.
And how said diney had all the best happy endings,but would the mistletoe get forgiven?
