Lescher, I have indeed lived since my birth in Milan, Lumbardy, a few miles from Queen Theodelinda's residence in Monza, and we still have many memories of Langobardic history here, especially in the names of places, such as "Fara..." which means "family" or "village" in the language of the Langobards.

I'm not sure about actual territories beloging to the Welf family, however. The name here had a political connotation: in brief, during the Middle Ages the supporters of the Welf family (Guelfi) coincided with the supporters of the Church, opposed to the Weiblings (Ghibellini, probably from the castle of Weibling) who supported the Emperor. Our most famous poet, Dante Alighieri, was a White Welf, that is he belonged to the moderate wing of the party and indeed he stood for the Emperor. But the origins of the names of these two ancient parties are almost lost in legend: it's become a manner of speaking, "guelfi e ghibellini", meaning "the usual quarrels among ourselves". :D
