Dear Bess,

Before you harp on me let me explain. I've bought a new diary just for this trip, since I felt it was warranted. When I get back to America I will continue to use the old one. Also please notice I am writing in shorthand, since this one is significantly smaller.

It is morning now. Have not seen Howell either last night or this morning. Strange; he doesn't go out often in the mornings without me. Even when he does he usually leaves me a note to tell me where he went.

Last night was such a beautiful night. I only wish I could've had a balcony instead a first floor porch. I went out on the town - not much to see yet. I finally started my biography on Dolly Madison last night too. And you thought I never would! James and her were so fascinating, I could talk on and on about them...

I am wearing a lavender sundress now, it is so hot. People always said it brought out my eyes. Let me guess what you are wearing! Blue? I know, that beautiful midnight blue gown you wore on your anniversary! Such a lovely dress.

Strange, even after all these years I'm still not used to sleeping by myself. I'm sure you already know, Bess, how much better it is to be lying next to a man, especially one as fit and young as you are. But you wouldn't tell now would you, Bess?

Also, I saw some strange things last night. Definitely not what you see everyday. I wonder if they are important? I must go now, my morning coffee has come.
