    Demosthenes was a classic example of a populist politician. Indeed, he may have invented the pose latter taken by such men as Publius Fabius Pulcher and Senator Joe McCarthy. Though he was greatly admired in the German nationalist period and, in truth, is still admired by some, his basic motives are in doubt to say the least. Was he a true patriot of Athens? Perhaps, but look at the bottom line of what he did for his country and what occurred because of it. His actions were foolish at best and immediately self serving. The results to his, " beloved " country were disastrous. His polemics against Philip reek of an unattractive vitriol. If you read his speeches in minor lawsuits against persons like Timeon they offend the sensibilities we have inherited from Greece. For someone who wraps the flag of Hellas around him, he is distinctly, un Greek in his excess.
