I knew a lot in the most general outlines about Demosthenes before I began learning about Alexander, but one thing in Green's bio just fascinated me: that when the infamous Harpalus absconded with the funds entrusted to him, and sought sanctuary in Athens, he paid Demosthenes a big bribe, big enough that the Athenian investigators fined Demosthenes 50 talents (a stunning sum!) and, when he could not pay it, imprisoned him. He escaped from prison (more bribes!) and had to flee Athens.
So, immediately what occurs to me was - WHAT was Demosthenes on the payroll for? Was it just for Harpalus or, in the years when Harpalus was a loyal lieutenant of Alexander's, was it for something else? And what does this do to our image of the noble anti-Macedonian rhetorician?
