in the post-classic as the Maya lowlands of the Peten collapse. Yet the post-classic sees the rise of other centers in the Yucatan such as Uxmal, Chichen-Itza, and Mayapan. It also is witness to mass migrations of peoples and to the Toltec invasion of the Yucatan. It is possible that the Toltecs could have invaded other portions of the Maya area such as the highlands of Guatemala and intermingled and intermarried with the princesses of the peoples of that area to form the K'iche', the Kakchikel, and the Tzutujil. We know most about this time period from post Spanish conquest sources and some archaeology. This was the period when the codices Paris, Dresden, Madrid, and Grolier were written and indeed the Dresden shows evidence of Toltec gods integrated into the Venus pages. Besides the obvious iconographic similarities in their representations, their central Mexican names are also written beside them syllabically in Maya glyphs. Proof positive of the intigrative nature of indigenous religion and colonialism.
