Winter Rose

A forced bud is a fragile thing—
Fear’s winter’s breath before the spring
So abides a sheltered life
And trades chill kiss for pruning knife

Life’s endless branching fate foregone
For asylum ‘gainst the winter storm
Yet when bud to bloom gives grace
The sheltered bloom adorns a vase
