This tanka from Tibet is a scroll painting of a religious subject on fabric. It is put on the altar during religious ceremonies.
For Tibetans, art can exercise its liberating function through any medium. Life is the highest medium. Reincarnation of enlightened beings on earth may be considered the most important artistic act. It is believed that art transmits a living presence and living incarnation far superior to any artistic representation. Literature, music, architecture, painting, and, sculpture can convey enlightenment. Art must be anonymous because the artist has to be selfless and open to enlightenment. The artist participates in the creation of a work of art out of dedication to the higher realm, not for fame or money.
