Isn’t it a fact that when a geographical territory changes hands from one nation to another the territory’s name is changed? For instance Constantinople changed into Istanbul when the Turks conquered the Byzantines, Palestine was named Israel when the Nation of Israel was created on Palestinian territory, e.t.c. My point is that although the territory over northern Greece was once named Macedonia (Greece has a state/province that is named Macedonia by right) it was because it was under Macedonian rule, and now that it’s not, why should it still be named after that. And the other point that I’m trying to make is that the names of these territories play a great part in the stability of the entire area, if I was a neighbor with someone that didn’t respect my point of view how would we ever get along? If tomorrow Greece decides to call Italy –Megali Ellada (magna Grecia) because it was once called like that and was inhabited by Greeks wouldn’t that be as silly as the issue between F.y.r.o.m and Greece? These people that have no cultural or politismic ancestry except the fact that they live in a territory that was called Macedonia by Greek Macedonians 2000 years ago, have the right to name them selves Macedonians and claim that they are descendants of Alexander the great?
As for the Greek, we do know that we have very few things in common with our glorious ancestors, maybe its because of the fact that we have been through at least 1800 years of deprived rights, slavery and freedom, first by the Romans then by the Turks but at least we speak the same language as the Macedonians, Spartans, Athenians and the rest of the Greeks spoke and we still have customs and morals that come directly from them.
If a person from FYROM or the rest of the world comes to me with real facts as to their Macedonian origin and I don’t mean the territorial origin but the bloodline, the customs and culture, then I will gladly vote for them being named Macedonia. As long as this doesn’t happen I think they should choose another name instead.
