Today's issue of "The Guardian" announced that there will soon be a final decision made concerning the motorway that they are threatening to build on Tara Hill. As mentioned in the previous post by Fen, and as I'm sure you all have read elsewhere, there has been a protest going on with global participation against state plans to cut through the valley with a motorway that will come within half a mile of the actual hill itself, not to mention the surrounding maze of historical, cultural and archaeological sites. There is definitely a traffic problem along the Meath corridor as commuters to Dublin are often tied up as long as 2 hours in gridlock. As it stands today, plans for the motorway have been passed by Ireland's planning board, even in the face of the protest, and now it is up to Dick Roche, the recently appointed minster of environment, to decide if it will go through. One archaeologist commented that if the motorway is approved, it will be "the worst case of state sponsored vandalism ever inflicted on Irish cultural heritage."
