A few years ago, a young lawyer who works for the ACLU was introduced to me at a garden party which I host every summer at my home. I remember well our conversation; it greatly impressed me. The young man, a Jew, was defending the right of The American Nazi Party to march through a Jewish neighborhood in our city. Though the lawyer was deeply offended by the very existence of his clients and hated everything they stood for, he fought for the freedom of speech of all American Citizens. So deep was his belief in the inalienable rights of freedom of expression for individuals that he forced himself to deal with citizens whom he detested and protect, not the individual citizens, but rather their rights as Americans. When I asked him about the reasons for his actions, he told me he could not be in any way like the nazis and still be an American Jew.
Yes Reylari, I can state with certainty that The ACLU is deeply concerned with the matter of individual free speech. It is also concerned with protecting minorities from the tyranny of the majority. The Bible is Christian. some of the people are Christian; some are not. The government is for all the people, all the time, and everywhere.
