as a graduate student, some thirty years ago, I recall (wishing I had the foresight to copy it verbatim) a posting on the door of one faculty member of my department that went somewhat as follows:
When Demosthenes gave a speech, the people rose to do what he said.
When Cicero gave a speech,the people left, commenting on how well he spoke.
