Yes I agree people took him seriously. Cicero's brilliance was with his creativity, in his speeches and in the things he did. He caught people's attention while other droned on using classic styles. He would not have been conserved in the history and reckoned by so many notables of the time period if his actions were nothing more than Tomfoolery.
