I looked out the carriage window at the dark and dank exterior blurring past.
So this is where my evil son has spent the last few years of his three centuries of hiding, I thought with disgust towards him and his chosen home.
The lack of vision through the streets due to the mist, was palpable, and as the coach wound its way through the compact alleys, I suspected the horses knew better where we were going than the more than slightly tremoring driver, and at the wheel sliding speed in which the coach skidded across the slimy cobblestones, I judged that to be a good thing.
The horses slid to a halt, screaming protests at the drivers hardy pulling at the reigns.
I climbed down from the coach, and surveyed little more than fog and shadows, but within them there were movements all around, and this did not escape the attention of the driver.
"Thank-you driver!" I spoke calmly, "Do you know of a place called The Crypt?"
"You dont want to be going there, my Lord!" He replied with quick glances about his parameter. "There be folks there who wouldnt be welcoming the likes of yourself!"
"And what are the likes of myself?" I asked with immusement.
"The noble sort, my Lord." He said as he looked down at me for the first time since I exited the carriage.
If only he knew I would fit in more than he realized, he might be in even more of a hurry to vacate the vicinity.
"When needs must". I replied with a nonchalant wave of my hand.
"Then it be your funeral, my Lord! The place you seek is down there."
He indicated with nothing more than a nod of his head, and without ceremony or warning, flipped my overnight bag from the top of the carriage, and had the horses in a gallop before it hit the sodden patchwork of gradually lifting cobbles.
I picked up my bag, and began the slow stroll down the street.
The aggressive hissing like territorial cats among the shadowed arches of doorways told me I was within familiar company, but the pariah of The Alleyway knew better than to approach one of such title and aged experience, so my path towards The Crypt was uninterrupted, and uneventful.
