There is, or at least should be, a text such as:

Viewing 0 to 49 out of 172 - Next 50

near the bottom of the topic page, below all the messages listed. The system lists 50 newest, and you have to change page when you want to see earlier messages (clicking the Next 50 link should do the trick).
