They withdraw quietly, but are intercepted by a pair of ashigaru patrollers. Yoshitomo drops to the grass, but Shiba is not quick enough. The foot soldiers spot him and give chase. the boy clambers up a tree and the foot soldiers stab up at him with their yari, long spears.

yoshitomo is on them in a flash, he splits the first down the middle and beheads a second before they turn around. The third finds a blade has skewered his midsection as soon as he does turn around.

The pair flee, heading for Kai, through the southwestern borders of Suruga province.
