Yup, that's right, the two of the most popular (and to some most corny (but lovable!!*runs from death glares*) Anime's ever.
Anyways:
Sailor Moon was based off of a mix of legends. Sailor Moon's name in Japanese Usagi Tsukino translates to "Rabbit of the Moon" which refers to the Chinese legend of Chang-Er who ate an Imortal Peach and floated up to the moon, where there lived a bunny who became her companion. Her Princess name Serenity, is derived from the Greek goddess Selene of the moon, who fell in love with a mortal...from Earth...named Endymion.(PRINCE Endymion/Mamoru in the Anime)See? It all makes sense now doesn't it! :P
Dragon Ball, though the story didn't have much of a mythologicl basis, it was suppose to be somewhat of an Anime-ish quirky version of the story of the Monkey King. The name of the main character, Son Goku, is a Japanese version of the Chinese name for the monkey king, Sun Wu Kong. Plus the fact that the kid had a tail, flys on a cloud, and has a stick that grows to any size he wants it, sort of hints at the relation. And many other little details/characters, like King Yama who was the God of the Dead in mythology, were based of varrious Asian legends.
