A CHAMUSH shaman derived supernatural power from a guardian spirit that might appear durring a dream or a trance. Such powers might be kindly or malevolent; they could control the weather or heal the sick. The
semiabstract designs painted on the walls of a sacred cave helped to perpetuate the power of the vision. Some of these designs would be symbolic, representing objects, creatures, or phenomena known to the shaman, and some would certainly be unique to the artist.
