I know that dogs were common pets in Ancient Rome, but mainly as herding dogs or watchdogs. Were other pets common? And if so, were they actually kept inside the house? It seems as though if cats or other more agile animals were kept as pets they would be able to escape through the open windows and doors. Does anyone know anything regarding this topic?
