Calenus saw the situation deteriorating fastly. Verres was already shouting and the crowd was getting nasty. Then he decided to make his move though he was bloody scared.
Addressing the man standing before him he now commanded, "Let the tribune of the people pass, do not hinder him in the performance of his duties". With no response but some jeers from the clients infront of the temple he grabbed the manīs tunic tossed him from his way. Shouting "Citizens, let the tribune pass." he tried to make a way through the mass of clients. Sometimes pushing, sometimes using his fists. After the first shock he started to be beated heavily. His toga was tored from his shoulders and he received repeated blows.
He managed to appeal to the crowd. "People of Rome! A tribunes sancrosanctitas is violated! Help the man who tries to protect you!
